Batgirl 2000 Animated

Batgirl 2000 Animated will be a fan-animated non-profit project attempting to adapt the Batgirl (2000) comic run into a 2D animated TV show. The minimum goal is a Season 1 trailer, which would be a short 3-minute animated trailer for issues #1-12 of the comic, or the Silent Knight bound volume. The maximum goal is production of a 12-episode season, each episode equivalent to one issue of the comic.

Closes June 22nd, 11:59 pm EST.

Do we need to have read the comics?

Nope! While any animators working on the project will be familiarized with the Batgirl 2000 comic over the course of the project, prior knowledge of it is not required or expected. An enthusiasm for Cassandra Cain is generally helpful, though!

Is this a paid project?

For the time being, we cannot guarantee payment for animators. This is a fan-run project that will be animated by people who really want to see this project come to life, much like a MAP (Multi-Animator Project) or other animation collabs online. The difficulty with collecting funds resides in DC being a copyrighted property. However, once the project gets moving, there may be a Patreon created in order for people following the project to be able to see updates -- and all of that money would be distributed among the animation team.

Does this project require previous animation experience?

Animators applying for roles like in-betweener or key artist may be expected to submit examples of their animation as part of their portfolio. This can be animation that was done as a hobby or for another fan-run project, like a MAP -- no professional experience will be required.

What software or device will we need to participate?

This project will be completed using either Tahoma2D or OpenToonz. This is a free software, but it can only be accessed via desktop, so users who draw on their phones may not be able to participate.

How close to canon are we staying?

Very. The trailer will be a summary of the first 12 issues of Batgirl 2000, spanning the "Silent Knight" TPB, and every episode that would be completed would be a near 1-to-1 from the comic. Some stuff will need to be cut, but a lot of scenes will be matched, and we hope to keep Cassandra's characterization almost exactly the same.

Are you going to whitewash any characters?

Not in a million years. We hope to keep the characters authentic in their presentation -- though in some cases that will mean deviating away from the lemon-yellow skintones of some parts of Batgirl 2000 to more genuine shades of brown. We also hope to cast Asian voice actors to play Shiva and Cassandra!

Can people fill multiple animation roles?

Generally we intend to start out the project with each person filling one role on the team, so that it's less work for everyone! For example, an in-betweener would only be expected to work on in-betweens, and would not be expected to cover other roles.Once onboarded, if certain contributors need someone to help cover their claimed scenes due to delays or personal events, other animators can pitch in by "pinch hitting" for other departments.

So is the art director only that role?

Yes, and we do not expect the art director to do any actual animation.

Do we have an anticipated time frame?

You can find the schedule on our Carrd as a link from our home page. While this is a pretty tight timeline currently, we fully anticipate delays and extensions stretching the timeline out by anywhere up to 6 months, and we're more than willing to work with animators who cannot give the project their full attention. We understand people have jobs!

Will you be adapting other cass cain comics?

For the time being, we have no intention to do anything other than focus on Batgirl 2000. This is already a project of hefty scale -- we want to finish a trailer for Batgirl 2000 before we even consider tackling adapting issue no. 1, much less something as large in scale as No Man's Land.
